Short answer
As a fleet grows, attachment variety quietly increases, and every new variant brings its own stock line, its own tool diameter and its own bracket. Standardisation means preferring, when buying new equipment, models that share the same tool diameter, the same mounting system and where possible the same spare parts group as what you already have. The gains land in three places: fewer stock lines, lower risk of fitting the wrong part, and attachments that move freely between machines. Standardisation is not built in one go but gradually, through replacement decisions.
How variety accumulates
Nobody creates variety deliberately. Each purchase decision is reasonable on its own terms: this attachment suited that project, that brand delivered faster at the time, this machine already had that bracket.
A few years later the picture is: four different tool diameters, three bracket types, two coupler systems. Each brings its own stock line and its own risk of confusion.
That picture is not a mistake but an accumulation. It is manageable once noticed; unnoticed, the stock list and downtime keep growing quietly.
Three concrete gains from standardisation

Introducing it gradually
Bringing existing equipment into line does not require replacing everything at once, and usually is not economical. Standardisation is built through replacement decisions: when an attachment reaches the end of its life, care is taken that its replacement fits the standard.
The first step is writing down the current state: which attachment on which machine, which bracket, which tool diameter. Without that inventory there is no way to know which standard to choose.
The second step is setting the target standard. Usually the configuration that repeats most in the fleet is chosen, because moving to it requires the least change.
The third step is adding it to purchasing criteria: when evaluating a new attachment, "does it fit the current standard" sits alongside price and lead time.
The limit of standardisation
Standardisation is a means, not an end. Refusing the attachment the job needs purely because it does not fit the standard would be wrong. The rule is: where two options are equivalent, choose the one that fits the standard; where they are not equivalent, choose the one that does the job properly and add the new line to the stock list knowingly.
Keeping the inventory current
- One line per machine: model, bracket type, attachments used, tool diameter.
- The record is updated at every attachment change; an inventory that is not updated becomes useless within six months.
- Labelling in the store should use the same naming as the inventory; two different naming schemes double the confusion rather than solving it.
- The inventory is consulted at every new purchase; without that habit, standardisation stays on paper.
