Combining excavator and attachment greasing into one schedule

Short answer

An excavator and an attachment need greasing at different intervals, but keeping two separate schedules means in practice that one always gets skipped, and it is usually the attachment. The answer is to merge them into one pre-shift list, put the attachment line among the machine lines rather than after them, and give the responsibility to one named person. When the attachment changes the list has to change too; swapping a breaker for a ripper changes the lubrication need entirely.

Why the two schedules do not line up

Boom, arm and bucket pins move slowly under high load, and their greasing intervals are relatively long. A breaker bushing takes dozens of blows a second and consumes its grease film far faster.

That difference pushes people towards two lists. But keeping two lists on site effectively means keeping one: the operator knows the machine list and forgets the attachment. Because the breaker is seen as part of the machine, "I greased the machine" is assumed to include it.

So the right structure is not to separate the schedules, but to show both frequencies in one list.

How to build the single list

  • Add the attachment line to the pre-shift check list and place it among the machine lines, not at the end. A line at the end gets skipped.
  • Write the line in terms of the attachment: "breaker bushing greased" is better than a vague "check attachment".
  • If automatic lubrication is fitted, the line becomes "cartridge level" rather than greasing; having a system does not remove the line.
  • On long shifts, open a second line for midday; that line is for the attachment only.
  • Name one person as responsible. Work that everyone is responsible for is work nobody is responsible for.

When the attachment changes, the list changes

On machines that swap attachments with a quick coupler, one lubrication list is not enough, because each attachment needs something different. A breaker wants frequent, generous grease; a ripper is a passive attachment with no hydraulic supply and only its pins are greased; crusher buckets and shears have their own moving points.

The practical answer is a one-line card for each attachment, added to the list when that attachment goes on. Three pieces of information are enough on the card: where, how often, which grease.

The quick coupler itself is also a greased component and one of the most forgotten. A coupler lock working properly is a safety matter.

The two things most often skipped at an attachment change

The first is the initial greasing of the attachment just fitted: grease may have drained while it stood in the store, so a round of grease is due once it is on. The second is greasing the attachment being removed before it goes back into store; a bushing left dry starts to corrode and comes back as a problem next season.

Keep the record simple

The more complicated a lubrication record is, the less it gets kept. What works on site is a single sheet in the cab: date, time, who did it, which attachment.

That record is valuable not only for discipline but for diagnosis. When a bushing finishes early the first question is "was it greased", and that can only be answered if a record exists. Without one, the discussion turns to part quality and the real cause is never found.

In fleet operations, collecting those sheets monthly shows where greasing genuinely slips. Usually the problem is not across the fleet but on one or two machines.

Put season and site conditions into the schedule

  • On dusty sites and in summer, attachment greasing frequency rises; review the list by season.
  • Grease stiffens in the cold; an automatic system feeds more slowly and a manual gun works harder. A separate winter check line helps.
  • Underwater and muddy work washes grease away; frequency has to increase noticeably.
  • If a machine will stand for a long period, grease before it is put away.

How is the schedule kept when operators change?

The single sheet in the cab exists exactly for that. At handover, looking at the sheet is far more reliable than passing it on verbally. Showing a new operator that the attachment has its own line should be part of the handover.

Who is responsible on a hired machine?

It depends on the contract, and it is often not written clearly. The hirer may assume they grease the machine and the customer the attachment, and the bushing in between burns. Putting in writing which points belong to whom at the start of the hire ends the argument before it starts.
