Striking into air after the material has broken. With no material left to absorb it, the impact energy goes straight back into the breaker body.

Why blank firing is so damaging

  1. 1In normal work the material being broken absorbs most of the impact energy. When there is no material, that energy dissipates in the breaker body, its tie rods and its bushings.
  2. 2The damage is cumulative rather than immediate: the metal fatigues and then fails without warning. That is why the impression that "nothing is happening" is misleading.
  3. 3Blank firing is the most common cause of body damage that falls outside warranty.

How blank firing happens and what it damages

1.Staying on the trigger after the material breaks

Is this the one?
The breaker keeps running for a second or two after the block comes away; the sound turns from dull to sharp and the tool bounces freely.
How to check
Watch the operator: is the control released the moment the material breaks? The change in sound is the clearest indicator of that moment.
What to do
Releasing the control the instant the material breaks is the single habit that extends breaker life most. It is the first item in operator training.

2.Running without full feed pressure on the tool

Is this the one?
The breaker runs before the tool is properly seated on the material; the tool bounces, the breaker makes no progress and hose vibration becomes noticeable.
How to check
Check whether the boom is applying enough feed force: the breaker body should be pressed lightly towards the material.
What to do
Seat the tool fully on the material and apply feed pressure before running. Insufficient feed pressure produces effectively the same damage as blank firing.

3.Persisting on the same spot

Is this the one?
The material is not breaking but the breaker runs on the same spot for minutes; the tool heats up and discolours.
How to check
If there is no progress at a point within a reasonable time, the material will not break there.
What to do
Move the strike point and work in from the edge. Persisting both tempers the tool and turns into blank firing.

4.Consequence: tie rod failure

Loosening at the body joint, a change in sound and, later, a broken tie rod.
How to check
Check tie rod torque periodically; loosening is the early warning of blank firing.
What to do
Replace the broken tie rod and apply the torque value from the manual. If the cause is not removed, the new rod will follow the same path.

5.Consequence: front head and bushing damage

Is this the one?
Increasing play at the tool, crack marks in the front head, ovalisation in the bushing.
How to check
Check tool play and the front head regularly. Increasing play is the first sign of bushing wear.
What to do
Replace the bushing in time. A late bushing change lets the tool run off centre, which in turn damages the seals and the front head.

6.Consequence: thrust ring and diaphragm damage

The gas chamber will not hold pressure, and oil seeps from the body.
How to check
Pressure loss and leakage occurring together mean the internal components have been overstressed.
What to do
Have the thrust ring and diaphragm assessed during service.

  • Release the control the moment the material breaks.
  • Seat the tool fully on the material and apply feed pressure.
  • If there is no progress at a point, move the point instead of persisting.

Does blank firing really damage the breaker?

Yes, and it is the fastest way to damage one. The impact energy normally absorbed by the material being broken goes back into the breaker body when there is no material. A large share of tie rod failures, front head cracks and bushing damage originates here.

How do I know I am blank firing?

The sound turns from dull to sharp and the tool starts bouncing freely. Hose vibration increases. An experienced operator hears it; a new operator should be taught this difference in sound specifically.

Is brief blank firing a problem?

A single instance causes no visible damage; the problem is cumulative. Every blow leaves fatigue in the metal and the failure comes without warning. That is exactly why the impression that "nothing is happening" is misleading.
