Breaker Overheating

Overheating is usually not the fault itself but its warning. As temperature rises the oil thins, leakage grows and the breaker loses power; if the cause is not found, damage accelerates.

First checks on site

  1. 1Check the front of the oil cooler and radiator: dust, mud and plant debris are the most common and most easily fixed cause.
  2. 2Check the hydraulic oil level: a low level shortens the settling time of the oil and raises its temperature.
  3. 3Make sure the breaker suits the carrier. If the carrier delivers more flow than the breaker can take, the excess turns directly into heat.

Causes and how to tell them apart

1.Inadequate cooling

Is this the one?
Temperature rises with ambient temperature; noticeably worse on hot days and on dusty sites.
How to check
Check the radiator and oil cooler cores and the operation of the fan.
What to do
Clean the cores and confirm fan and thermostat operation. This is the most common and cheapest cause of overheating to fix.

2.Oil flow above the breaker capacity

Is this the one?
The breaker runs normally or fast but the circuit heats continuously. Usually seen where the breaker is small for the carrier.
How to check
Compare the flow the carrier delivers to the breaker line with the operating flow range on the model product page.
What to do
Reduce the flow into the breaker range. Excess flow does not make the breaker faster; it turns into heat across the relief valve.

3.Return line restriction or blocked filter

Is this the one?
The return line is noticeably hot; the filter fills quickly or the bypass stays open.
How to check
Check the return filter and the line for crushing or kinking. A hose whose inner layer has delaminated looks sound from outside but restricts flow.
What to do
Replace the filter and renew any crushed or internally damaged hose.

4.Wrong oil viscosity

Is this the one?
Hard to start in the cold, loses power quickly once hot. A strong clue if it appeared after an oil change.
How to check
Check the viscosity of the oil in use and its working temperature range.
What to do
Move to a viscosity that suits the working temperature. Thin oil increases internal leakage; thick oil increases flow resistance and heat.

5.Sustained blank firing

Is this the one?
Heating decreases or increases noticeably when the operator changes.
How to check
Observe the working technique: is the control released after the material breaks?
What to do

6.Internal leakage (piston, cylinder or seal wear)

Is this the one?
The above are eliminated; the breaker both heats and loses power, and the condition worsens over time.
How to check
Internal leakage cannot be measured on site; disassembly is required.
What to do
Send it to a service workshop. When the seal kit is renewed, the condition of the bushings must also be assessed.

When to stop

  • If oil temperature has gone above the working range, stop working; hot oil damages seals permanently.
  • Do not try to thin the oil to bring the temperature down; degrading viscosity increases leakage.
  • Do not normalise overheating as a "summer condition"; when the cause is not found, damage builds up silently.

What is the most common cause of overheating in a hydraulic breaker?

On site the most frequent cause is dust blocking the cooler and radiator cores. Once that is eliminated, check flow mismatch, return line restriction and wrong oil viscosity in that order.

Does more oil flow make the breaker faster?

No. A breaker is designed to work within a given flow range; excess flow does not raise the blow rate but turns into heat across the relief valve and stresses the circuit.

Does overheating cause permanent damage?

It does. High temperature first hardens the seals and starts leakage, then thins the oil film so that wear on piston and cylinder surfaces accelerates. For that reason overheating should be treated not as a fault but as the warning of one on its way.
