Breaker Striking Weakly

The breaker runs but will not break the material. In this symptom the blow rate is your strongest clue: has it become faster or slower?

  1. 1Note the blow rate: is it striking FASTER and lighter than usual, or SLOWER? This single observation eliminates half the possible causes.
  2. 2Check the oil temperature. Overheated oil thins out and the breaker loses noticeable power.
  3. 3Look at the tool: a blunt or wrong-type tool makes a healthy breaker look inefficient.

Causes and how to tell them apart

1.Nitrogen (gas) pressure has dropped

Is this the one?
The breaker strikes FASTER than usual but each blow is light; the sound is thin and high pitched. This is the classic signature of low nitrogen pressure and is what separates it from the other causes.
How to check
Measure the gas chamber pressure. The correct value varies by model; consult the manual or ask our service team.
What to do
Top up the pressure following the procedure. If the pressure drops again quickly, the gas chamber seal or the diaphragm is leaking and simply recharging will not solve it.

2.Insufficient oil flow

Is this the one?
The breaker strikes SLOWER than usual. The symptom worsens when engine speed is reduced and partly improves when it is raised.
How to check
Confirm that the flow the carrier delivers to the breaker line is within the range the breaker requires. Each model publishes its operating flow on its product page.
What to do
Bring the flow setting into the breaker range. If the carrier cannot deliver it, the breaker is too large for that machine; review the class match.

3.Low operating pressure or relief valve opening early

Is this the one?
Both speed and power are low. In hard material the breaker practically stalls, while in soft material it seems normal.
How to check
Have the breaker line operating pressure measured and compare it with the operating pressure range of the model.
What to do
Have the pressure setting and relief valve checked by a service technician. If the relief valve is set low, it dumps the circuit before the breaker can take full load.

4.Oil overheated, viscosity has dropped

Is this the one?
Works normally at the start of the shift and loses noticeable power as it runs. Recovers briefly after a break.
How to check
Monitor oil temperature and check the cooler and radiator for cleanliness.

5.Piston or cylinder wear (internal leakage)

Is this the one?
The above are eliminated; the breaker is both weak and heating faster than normal. Typically seen on a breaker that has been slowly losing power over a long period.
How to check
Internal leakage cannot be measured on site; disassembly and measurement are required.
What to do
Send it to a service workshop. The wear is usually caused by contaminated oil or sustained blank firing; without removing the cause the renewed part will have the same life.

6.Blunt or wrong-type tool

Is this the one?
The breaker itself sounds normal but makes no progress in the material. The tool tip is rounded (mushroomed) or the wrong type was chosen for the job.
How to check
Check the sharpness and type of the tool tip: moil, chisel, blunt and pyramid tools are for different materials.
What to do
Grind or replace the tool and choose the right type for the job. The correct tool type improves productivity noticeably.

When to stop

  • Do not try to compensate for power loss by pushing harder; if there is internal leakage the damage grows quickly.
  • Do not add gas without measuring the pressure first; overfilling stops the breaker striking altogether.
  • Do not keep striking the same spot to force a break; that turns into blank firing damage.

Frequently asked

My breaker strikes fast but lightly. What causes that?

That is the classic sign of low nitrogen pressure. When gas chamber pressure drops, the piston works with a shorter, faster stroke; the blow count rises but impact energy falls. Insufficient flow does the opposite and slows the blow rate.

The breaker loses power as it heats up. Is that normal?

No. As oil heats it thins and internal leakage grows. If cooling is inadequate or there is a restriction in the circuit, the breaker weakens as it runs. Recovering after a break and then weakening again supports this diagnosis.

I recharged the gas but the pressure dropped again. What now?

If the gas chamber will not hold pressure, a seal or the diaphragm is leaking. Repeated recharging is a temporary fix and the breaker wears while running under low pressure in between; the leaking component must be replaced.
