Breaker or Drum Cutter?

A breaker fragments material with impact and detaches blocks; a drum cutter removes material with rotating picks. Both the result and the constraints differ.

Short answer

If the job is to remove volume quickly and profile accuracy does not matter, a breaker is usually faster and cheaper.

If the job is to produce a specific profile correctly (tunnel section, trench wall, slope trimming), the drum cutter wins: it trims the surface under control without over-breaking.

Where vibration is restricted, in built-up areas and next to existing structures, the drum cutter has a clear advantage; it applies cutting force rather than impact, so the vibration transmitted to the surroundings is low.

Can a drum cutter replace a breaker?

No, they do different jobs. A breaker removes volume, a drum cutter works surfaces and profiles. On the same site the two are often used together: the breaker does the bulk removal, the drum cutter trims the section.

Why does a drum cutter have a vibration advantage?

A breaker delivers energy as impact and part of that impact travels through the ground to the surroundings. A drum cutter applies cutting force through rotating picks, so the vibration transmitted is markedly lower. That is why it is preferred next to existing structures.

Which is more economical?
